A pregnant woman shocked US doctors when she had a scan which showed her baby girl – and a second, younger male baby beside her.

Julia Grovenburg conceived the second baby two-and-a-half weeks after the first and they are both developing side by side in her womb.

The babies are an extremely rare case of “superfoetation” when a woman conceives for a second time while already pregnant, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Dr Karen Boyle, of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center said:

When the woman had her ultrasound initially they saw one sack, one baby developing, and that baby had a certain gestational age.

Then they noticed a second heartbeat in a child that was much, much younger developmentally. It does really sound like this is a true case of different conception times for these children.

Mrs Grovenburg, from Arkansas, conceived the two non-twins, who have different due dates, with her husband Todd.

The older one had already been given the name Jillian and her younger brother will be called Hudson.

The mother-to-be’s obstetrician Dr Michael Muylaert said:

This is an unusual and rare condition but the possibility is real. It can only be confirmed after delivery by chromosomal and metabolic studies on the babies.

Superfoetation can be dangerous for the younger baby as it could lead to premature birth and lung problems, but experts said a gap of only two-and-a-half weeks should not lead to a problem for Hudson.

If he lives through it (I mean playing with the toys below), he’ll live through anything.

A Chinese farmer dug a 50ft hole inside his house to go fishing. Li Huiyan, of Chongqing, hired 30 villagers for six months to dig the hole in his kitchen, reports IC Media.

He wanted to reach an underground river which he suspected was full of fish.

The river had been over ground but had disappeared 30 years ago when the local authorities bombed part of a mountain to pave a road.

Li explained: “The river used to have so many fish, and by simply putting a net there, hundreds of fish would be caught.”

After digging his pit down to the river, Li installed a fishing net across it and regularly hauls out fish, so far earning his family nearly £2,000.

“I sell the fish at a wholesale price of 24 yuan (£2.15p) per kilo, but 36 yuan (£3.20p) per kilo for retail,” he said.

Li built ladders from his kitchen to the river 16 metres below, and each day he has to go down to check the harvest.

This amazing mechanic design was made out of transmission parts, electrical conduits, plumbing pipes and 20 gauge cold rolled steel. It is 36″ X 36″ X 18″ and weights about 85 lbs. All the joints move and lock in place, turning a gear on the elephant’s side winds a cable around a shaft which raises and lowers the trunk and the ears move back and forth and can fan out (to dissipate heat).

According to the UK Guardian, describing the project when it was first created:

Diphallia, penile duplication (PD), diphallic terata, or diphallasparatus, is a medical condition in which a male infant is born with two penes. This is an extremely rare disorder with only approximately 1000 cases of diphallia recorded since the first, reported by Johannes Jacob Wecker in 1609. Its occurrence is one in 5.5 million men in the United States.

When diphallia is present, it is usually accompanied by other congenital anomalies such as renal, vertebral, hindgut or anorectal duplication. There is also a higher risk of spina bifida. Infants born with PD and its related conditions have a higher death rate from various infections associated with their more complex renal or colorectal systems.

It is thought diphallia occurs in the fetus between the 23rd and 25th days of gestation when an injury, chemical stress, or malfunctioning homeobox genes hamper proper function of the caudal cell mass of the fetal mesoderm as the urogenital sinus separates from the genital tubercle and rectum to form the penis.

Characteristics

• # Those in possession of a diphallus tend to be sterile, due to either congenital defects or difficulties in application.
• # Urine may be passed by both penises, by only one, or through some other aperture in the perineum.
• # A range of duplication types have been seen, ranging from organs that fissure into two, to the presence of two distinct penes positioned at some distance from each other.
• # Most diphalluses lie side by side and are of equal size, but they can be seated atop one another, with one distinctly larger than the other.

This rare condition has been documented in pigs and other mammals.
Diphallia is a medical condition and should not be confused with genital bisection, which is an elective procedure which involves the splitting of the penis.

Getting back to our story: a german who persuaded doctors to give him a second penis has lost his wife after he showed her the result.

Biker Michael Gruber, 40, lost his original penis in a motorbike accident and doctors built him a second one using a mixture of skin, bone and other tissues from his own body.

The penis worked so well that he was even able to father a child with his wife Bianca, 25, and their son Etienne was born last year.

But Gruber was still not happy and asked doctors to repeat the operation and build him a better organ, to which they agreed.

However, before removing the first penis doctors said they needed to make sure the new tissue transplant was a success, and had to leave the first penis in place.

Dr Markus Kuentscher, a plastic surgeon at Berlin’s Accident Hospital, said: “We left the old one attached until the new one is properly supplied with blood.”

But when Gruber showed his wife his double penis, she went home, packed her bags and left.

From his hospital bed he said: “I’ve got two penises but no wife, but I am hoping when I get rid of one of the penises I will get her back.”

His testicles are intact and will be connected to what is actually his third penis when doctors are happy the operation was a success.

His story was this week featured on a German TV documentary called The Last Penis Operation.

An adit is a type of entrance to an underground mine which is horizontal or nearly horizontal.[1] Adits are usually built into the side of a hill or mountain, and often occur when a measure of coal or an ore body is located inside the mountain but above the adjacent valley floor or coastal plain. The use of adits is generally called drift mining.

Strange … but beautiful indeed.

Sleeping on a train, plane or car would be a hell of a lot more comfortable if your jacket had a hood that could inflate and function as a pillow.

The jacket, confusingly dubbed “Never Stop a Rolling Stone” by designer Rahel Ritchie features a fully inflatable hood that can be manually adjusted via a mouthpiece tucked away in the fabric. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that this concept is available for sale. The latter is actually a hoodie and it doesn’t feature a fully inflatable hood – but it does have a built in eye mask and earplugs for lullaby listening.
